Randonneur Ride Report: Santa Cruz Randonneurs Marina 300k

Last year, when I began riding “inappropriately long distances” as my friend Jason would say, I focused on completing the entire San Francisco Randonneurs‘ series. This year I wanted to mix things up, and my second year has been a veritable “Brevet Buffet”: I sampled rides from most of other the clubs in the Bay Area (with the exception of Fresno, which just launched their series this spring). In January, I rode an early Healdsburg to Napa 200k with the Santa Rosa Cycling Club; finished most of the Davis Bike Club’s brevet series (but had to skip out on their March 200k as I was out sick — I plan to make it up later in the year); and now, I just wrapped up my inaugural ride with the Santa Cruz Randonneurs run by Lois Springsteen and Bill Bryant.

Box Dog Bikes Summer Camp 2014

The fine folks at Box Dog Bikes organized their second annual camping trip that headed out to Anthony Chabot Regional Park in the East Bay hills this weekend. 16 of us rolled from West Oakland BART at 10AM to take the longer, 27-mile mixed terrain route with a lunch stop at the marina cafe. More campers joined in later in the evening to celebrate the summer solstice and enjoy the fine Vietnamese-theme feast provided by Lindy and Nick of Pedal Inn. Can’t wait to join in Box Dog’s next adventure!

Randonneur Ride Report: Antelope Lake Davis 600k

I had set three goals going into the Davis Bike Club’s Antelope Lake 600k: 1) finish out the series (sadly, I missed the 200k due to illness but completed the 300k and 400k; 2) help Denise complete her first 600k and earn “Super Randonneuse” status; 3) qualify for the 2014 California Central Coast Randonnée.

Randonneur Ride Report: 2014 San Francisco Randonneurs Dart

As TBO is not too keen on riding distances longer than 200k, I was thrilled when he volunteered to design a populaire-length route and co-lead a team for this year’s SFR Dart. He recruited two non-RUSA friends — Jonathan and his girlfriend Keli — and I invited my rando pal Jorge, who was on my team last year and has ridden 3/4 of the 2014 SFR series (but had to skip the 600k due to knee problems.) Our plan as Team “The Bearded One Express” was to start at the Ferry Building in San Francisco, retrace much of the Lucas Valley Populaire route, but then continue north towards Novato instead of west. Then we’d take Sears Point Road, aka Route 37, across the northernmost part of the bay to Vallejo. After stopping at our 6-hour control in Crockett, we’d then shoot down towards the finish at Pyramid Brewery in Berkeley.

2014 Davis Double Century

The 45th Annual Davis Double Century is the first double on the California Triple Crown series that I’ve now completed and the second big club-supported ride I’ve ridden in thus far. (The Grizzly Peak Century from several years ago was my maiden voyage in the realm of rides over 100 miles.) Endurance riding is still a new discipline for me as I began randonneuring last year, and I’m only now tackling events on the CTC calendar. I think most folks begin riding doubles before moving up to the longer distances, so I’m taking a backwards approach by finishing them the other way around!
