Nakalele Blowhole

back to maui

TBO & I headed back to Maui for a week to celebrate my 40th birthday! We stayed in Kihei once again and explored the west side of the island at the Nakalene Blowhole, Ohai Trail and the Olivine Pools; bodysurfed at Slaughter House Beach; petted a ton of cute baby goats at a farm; rode a crazy 202k and rode up Haleakala on my actual birthday. And we didn’t neglect our appetites and ate loads of delicious food at Leoda’s Kitchen and Pie Shop, Star Noodle, Maui Brewing Company, Paia Fish Market and Hali’imaile General Store. I think Kauai’s next on our bucket list…

Happy 40th Birthday on Haleakala

Is there a better way to celebrate turning 40 than by riding to the top of the highest paved road climb in the U.S.? (The answer is no if you’re a crazy cyclist like myself!) Our legs were pretty thrashed after doing this 202k just two days earlier, so we took our time climbing the mountain. We left from Kihei and rode through rain and sunshine to reach the top. TBO suffered from altitude sickness and slowed down at the 7000 ft. mark, while I was just tired, hungry and ready to pass out from fatigue by the summit. But we made it 8 hours later! Then we headed back to Kihei to finish our 91-mile roundtrip ride and eat tons of delicious food at Star Noodle in Lahaina.

Randonneur Ride Report: Hana Hiatus 202k

I’m not one to be lazy when I take a vacation, even when I travel to tropical getaways like Maui where the only decision you’re expected to make is whether you should order your third piña colada at the hotel bar,  or mosey on down to the beach and pass out on the sand with beer in hand. My idea of relaxation usually consists of a frenetic day jam-packed full of outdoorsy activities: “It’s time to go hiking, biking, swimming, kayaking, [insert sporty verb]!”
